Stages of the route

stage 1
From Ville Vieille to la Chalp in St Véran

see the map
From the Astragales gîte, head for the church, cross the road and take the little bridge. Then head towards the Bucher peak. Follow the yellow waymarkers. At the foot of Bucher, follow the path to the Prés de Fromage pass.
Then head for St Simon’s Chapel. From the chapel, follow the GRP trail which leads down to La Chalp and the Baita du Loup gite.
At kilometre 5, you can take a short detour to the top of Bucher for an extra elevation gain of 100 metres and a magnificent view over the valley.

stage 2
From St Véran to Aiguilles

see the map
Follow the Tour de la Dent du Ratier GRP trail towards the hamlet of Pierre Grosse. On leaving the hamlet, take the balcony path above Molines-en-Queyras and Gaudissart to reach the village of Prats Hauts.
Leaving Prats Hauts, take the mountain-bike trail on the right. After passing an oratory, you'll enter the forest.
Follow the mountain-bike trail for about 2km on a descent with 40 hairpin bends to reach the forest track at the bottom which leads to Aiguilles.

stage 3
From Aiguilles to Souliers

see the map
Cross the village of Aiguilles to reach the Dent du Ratier GRP trail. This GRP section follows the same path as a variant of the GR58. At kilometre 7, you’ll arrive at the hamlet of Les Meyriès where there’s a lovely view of Fort Queyras. Continue towards Rouet to reach the Péas sheepfold at kilometre 11. Here you may well see a patou sheepdog guarding its herd!
After the final 2km climb, you can enjoy the beautiful descent to Souliers.
Option: Before you reach Meyriès you can get to the Péas sheepfold via the Col de la Crèche. This adds an extra 300-metre elevation gain but offers a panoramic view of the Queyras peaks.

stage 4
From Souliers to Brunissard

see the map
Leave Souliers by the north on the footpath that follows the torrent. After 2km turn left at the Souliers sheepfold towards the Tronchet pass. Then take the path leading back down to Brunissard.
Option: At the Souliers sheepfold, continue straight ahead to reach Lake Souliers. To get to Brunissard, take the path down to La Casse Déserte, then the path leading back to below the Tronchet pass

stage 5
From Brunissard to Villargaudin

see the map
On the way out of Brunissard, take the GR58 to the Furfande pass. You’ll reach the col, 900 metres higher up, after climbing for 10km. Then head for the Furfande Refuge. Here you can enjoy a break and a bite to eat. Continue for 1.5km along the path to the Col de la Lauze. Begin your descent through the forest. After 3km you'll reach Le Queyron car park. It’s another 2km to Villargaudin. Don’t forget to stop and admire Fort Queyras in the distance.
Option: A shorter itinerary of 5 hours takes you via the Fontouse pass, the Fontouse cabin, Le Queyron and Villargaudin.

stage 6
From Villargaudin to Ville Vieille

see the map
Head towards Les Moulins to reach the Izoard pass. Walk up the road for a short distance and take the path facing you towards Lake Roue. After a fairly tough ascent, you’ll reach the GR5 trail which will lead you back to Château-Queyras. The descent includes some very steep sections. Leave the path to join the road and, at the traffic lights, turn right onto the road leading down to the cemetery. Continue on this road, which goes around Fort Queyras by the right for 1km. You’ll now be overlooking the Guil river and the via ferrata trail. You’ll arrive at the bridge over the Guil. Without crossing the bridge, follow the path along the left bank of the river to Ville Vieille.
Option: When you meet the GR5 trail, don’t hesitate to do the extra 700 metres to see Lake Roue.
